Posting to encourage everyone to contact his/her NYS Assembly Member and NYS Senator about the Auxiliary Police Officer Protection Act that was proposed this year. I've heard it was proposed in years past, but never got legs.
In short, the bill extends the same statutory protections to Aux officers as the penal law contains for POs, peace officers, firefighters, etc. Several violent crimes in NY are automatically of a higher degree if they are committed against uniformed LEOs or other rescue personnel. While the law protects other volunteers, and while we wear uniforms indistinguishable to most people from regular police officers, we are not covered.
The full text of the bill is linked here:
Please contact your assembly member and ask him to support A1138; contact your senator and ask him to support S3700 (the same bill in the senate).
Be safe, and a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all,
