|Former Auxiliary Police Officer George Orlando passed away Saturday, June 26, 2010, at the age of 78. George was assigned to the Fifth Precinct Auxiliary Unit and rose to the rank of Captain. He had retired from the auxiliary police several years ago.
After an 8 year career in the U.S. Air Force, George attended St. John's University and received a degree in pharmacology. He was a licensed pharmacist and taught science in the Central Islip school system for 30 years. He remained active with the military and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserve.
George loved to travel and toured many states in his motor home. He was an enthusiastic horseman and a member of the Blue Knights Police Motorcycle Club. He joined the Bohemia Fire Department in 1980 and remained active with the Fire Police Company up until his death. George is survived by his wife, Susan Orlando, also a retired auxiliary police officer, and two sons.
Fifth Precinct APO's, under the leadership of A/Inspector Richard Fox, performed honor guard duties during services held for George on Wednesday night. We will all miss his humor, advise, and inspiration.
